Target stores across the United States will be open on New Year’s Day 2026 (January 1), operating during their regular business hours, though exact opening and closing times can vary by location and customers are advised to check local store details before visiting, according to available retail schedules and guidance from the company and third-party reporting.

As a federal holiday in the U.S., New Year’s Day sees many government offices, courts, banks and postal services closed, but most major retailers have chosen to remain available to shoppers. Target is among the national chains—alongside Walmart, Macy’s, Kohl’s, CVS and Walgreens—that will keep doors open, with many stores maintaining typical hours or adjusting slightly for the holiday.

Retailers including Target generally do not close on New Year’s Day, unlike other holidays such as Thanksgiving or Christmas, when the company shuts all locations; its official holiday hours list notes closures only on those major holidays.

While Target and similar big-box stores are open, some other retailers and chains will remain closed for the day. Warehouse clubs such as Costco and Trader Joe’s are observing the holiday shutdown, with all locations closed on January 1.

Shoppers are reminded that operating hours can differ between regions and individual stores, especially on federal holidays. Many retailers suggest using their online store locators or mobile apps to confirm exact opening times before heading out, particularly for early-morning or late-evening visits. The Economic Times
