Los Angeles, United States- Michael B Jordan won the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 98th Academy Awards for his dual performance in the film Sinners, marking the first Oscar win and nomination of his career, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and multiple media reports. The ceremony took place March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
Jordan received the award for portraying twin brothers Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore in the supernatural drama directed by Ryan Coogler. The film, set in the American South during the Great Depression, follows the twins as they attempt to open a juke joint while confronting violent threats in their community.
The win placed Jordan among a small group of Black actors to receive the Best Actor Oscar, joining past winners including Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker and Will Smith.
During his acceptance speech, Jordan thanked director Ryan Coogler, his collaborators and family, and acknowledged the influence of earlier generations of Black performers in the film industry.
Sinners entered the ceremony with 16 nominations, the most for any film in the 2026 Oscars race and the highest nomination total in the awards’ history. The movie ultimately won several categories including Best Original Screenplay for Coogler in addition to Jordan’s acting prize.
Jordan, 39, first gained recognition in television roles including The Wire and All My Children before building a film career through collaborations with Coogler in Fruitvale Station, the Creed franchise and Marvel’s Black Panther.
After the ceremony, actor Miles Teller, who previously worked with Jordan on the films That Awkward Moment and Fantastic Four, publicly congratulated him with a throwback photo shared on social media, praising the achievement following Jordan’s Oscar victory.
The 98th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, honored films released in 2025 and were broadcast on ABC and streamed on Hulu.
